Jews and Hungarians in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Hungarian Proverb Collections

Rosen, Ilana · 2017

Cultural Studies/Arts
Proverbs are concise formulations of folk wisdom and views, and as such, when seen in masses, they may well express the spirit of their time and place. In Hungarian proverbial lore Jews figure prominently in the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century collections but fade out of such collections as of the mid twentieth century. While still present in Hungarian proverb collections, Jews are invariably portrayed in them as dishonest, greedy, physically weak and unattractive. Largely, this portrayal as well as the dynamics of presence versus disappearance matches the shared history of Hungarians and Hungarian Jews since the 1867 Emancipation of the country's Jews, through their growing integration in significant arenas of their host society, up to their persecution and annihilation in the Holocaust, and later their decade long forced merging into the general Hungarian society by communism. This presentation traces the occurrence and disappearance of Jews in Hungarian proverb collections as well as analyzes the content and messages of proverbs about Jews in the collections. Finally, by way of presenting a possible counter corpus, it examines the Hungarian-Jewish sense of belonging to Hungarian society based on a few much humbler proverb corpora of former Hungarian Jews.

Jews on the Borders – Some Fragments of the Activities of KEOKH

Kovács, Tamás · 2013

History/Political Science
Between 1930 and 1945, KEOKH (National Central Authority for Controlling Aliens) was an important branch of the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior. The head of the Authority was directly subordinated to the Minister of the Interior. The Authority included a central office (in Budapest) and a few local offices (in the countryside, near the state borders). For as much the clerks worked for the Ministry of the Interior, the clerks were, at the same time, police officers as well.
KEOKH started focusing on the Jews, especially of “unclear citizenship”, particularly after 1938. Usually, they were refugees escaping from neighboring countries to Hungary. The vast majority of these refugees had some kind of family lineage in or from Hungary. KEOKH treated these Jews as enemies. KEOKH organized raids both in Budapest and near the borders. We know KEOKH was tasked to organize the “cross-border transfer of Jews”. One of the most known and important stories is the massacre at Kamenets-Podolsk. In addition, we know of other cases when the Hungarian organizations did the same as at Kamenets-Podolsk.
On the other hand, when the military or political situation started to change, KEOKH’s policy also changed. They protected the Jewish refugees like the Western European prisoners of war. The German occupation changed the political situation. From this date, German organizations (RSHA, SD, Gestapo) took over control. The Hungarian Ministry of the Interior became both a collaborationist and an executor.

John Paget: Magyarország és Erdély, Rubicon Intézet, 2022. Ford. Rakovszky Zsuzsa,
Czintos Emese, Szabó Dániel, Pellérdi Márta
John Paget nagysikerű, 1839-ben kiadott könyvét (Hungary and Transylvania: With remarks
on their Condition, Social, Political, and Economical), végre teljes fordításban kaphatja
részleteket fordítottak le a teljes műből, többnyire politikai okokból kifolyólag. A 2022

The complete translation of John Paget’s popular travel narrative Hungary and Transylvania:
With remarks on their Condition, Social, Political, and Economical (1839) is finally available
in its entirety for Hungarian readers. Although the book was published twice in Hungarian in
the past (in 1987, 2011), there were political reasons behind the editorial cuts of the previous
translations. The recent 2022 edition by Rubicon Institute, however, is not only richly
illustrated, but it offers a complete translation to Hungarian readers. The book presentation
briefly explains the reasons why the complete edition was delayed for almost two hundred
years and why John Paget's significant work is still worth reading today.

Joseph Goldmark and How the Ideals of 1848 Transformed the United States

Rothblatt, Raul · 2013

History/Political Science
The defeat of the 1848 revolutions brought many ‘48ers to the United States. These immigrants became integral to the various political and social reform movements occurring throughout the US at this time. This study will look at the impact of one man in particular, Joseph Goldmark. He was one of the most prominent heroes of 1848, a leader of the student rebels in Vienna and a co-author of the liberal constitution of 1849.
The idea of “emancipation” in Europe turned into the fight for emancipation in the US and a passionate support for Abraham Lincoln. For Joseph Goldmark, the ideals of 1848 animated not only his political and professional life, but also that of his children. His son-in-law, Louis Brandeis (wife of his daughter Alice) became one the most important jurists in US history. He worked closely with another daughter, Josephine Goldmark.
The halls of the Supreme Court of 1930 did not seem distant from the heady revolutionary days of the Hapsburg Empire of 1848 to Josephine Goldmark. She published Pilgrims of '48: One man's part in the Austrian revolution of 1848 well after the Great War.
This study will remind us of the influence of the ‘48ers on science, law, religion, and connect Hungarian history to the Progressive movement of the early 20th century.

József Domján and Other Hungarian Graphic Artists in America

Szabó, Lilla · 2010

Cultural Studies/Arts

Judith Fenyvesi, Sister of Social Service: Leader/Activist in the USA in the aftermath of the Hungarian Holocaust and Communist Era

DeRose, Kathy · 2014

History/Political Science
This presentation will detail the life of Sr. Judith Fenyvesi, Sister of Social Service, who was a leader and activist in the aftermath of the Hungarian Holocaust and Communist era. Some writers say that she was a “Woman of Courage and Light.” The amazing story of her life indeed reflects these two attributes. Sr. Judith was born into a prominent Jewish family in Salonta, Romania—a small village near the Hungarian border. This territory later became a tug of war between the two countries. Turning points in her life as they relate to Hungarian history will unfold in this presentation.

Some of the major events that shaped the life of Judith Fenyvesi include her conversion from Judaism to Catholicism; she worked in the Catholic resistance movement in an effort to maintain Religious freedom under Communist rule; when ties to Rome among priests and bishops were severed by the Communist regime, it was Sr. Judith who carried messages to the Papal Nuncio; she was later arrested and held for 28 months before she was sentenced to ten years in prison as a political prisoner. In 1964 Sr. Judith immigrated to the United States where she joined the Sisters of Social Service in Buffalo, NY. After completing a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s degree in the states, she created a social work program at Daemen College, eventually serving as its Director.

Perhaps the darkest and most painful event of her life was the annihilation of her entire family at Auschwitz. While she felt the guilt of survival for many years, Sr. Judith used the harsh realities of the Holocaust to fulfill a lifelong dream; that was, to work to alleviate human suffering and to give hope to those in darkness.

Fran Rossi Szpylczyn recently posted on a Pastoral blog the following, “What strikes me is that in Judith we find a woman, persecuted at many levels—for being a Jew, for being a woman religious, for being a Catholic. And even at her worst, she found the light of Christ to guide her on through many circumstances” (pastoralpostings.wordpress.com/tag/Judith-fenyvesi, 25 June 2013).

Károly Szabó’s Union Catalog, “Old Hungarian Library”, and the Bibliographic Construction of Greater Hungary

Niessen, James · 2010

Language/Literature
As librarian of the Transylvanian Museum Society in Cluj/Kolozsvár for the first thirty years of its existence, Károly Szabó (1824-90) brought together in a pioneer union catalog not only descriptions but holdings for early Hungarian imprints located in multiple repositories. His innovation in library science was inspired by the project to create a Greater Hungary.
Szabó’s job description as librarian placed central emphasis on the cataloging and description of the manuscripts and books entrusted to his care. In assembling the book catalog he determined that an adequate description of the early publications required that he compare them to other copies and unique items in other repositories, and also that Hungarian imprints be defined by place of publication rather than language. Hence the catalog of one library grew into boxes of cards carefully annotated thru visits and correspondence with more than 40 repositories, then eventually into the multivolume work that was completed after his death but was always meant to stimulate additional entries by colleagues around the country.
This paper proposes to investigate the inspiration and significance of Szabó’s "Old Hungarian Library" for librarianship in Hungary and abroad. I am in correspondence with Cluj/Kolozsvár in Romania and hope to consult Szabó’s papers there for the completion of this project.

Kárpát-medence vs. Történelmi Magyarország a határon túl élő magyarság identitás-viszonyulásában

Hajdú, Zoltán · 2015

History/Political Science

Education/Social Sciences

Havas, Judit · 2023 · Paper presentation

Language/Literature
A 2023-as évben az AHEA konferencián a milyen is „Az igazi Petőfi:„ kérdéssel kívánok foglalkozni.
” Előadásommal kísérletet teszek a kérdés megválaszolására.

Knowledge Exchange Between Hungary and the United States: the Calasanctius Foundation and Its 15-Year Experience

Oláh, Krisztina · 2011

Education/Social Sciences
Calasanctius is a Hungarian-American Foundation supporting the exchange of knowledge between Hungary and the United States. The main mission of the Calasanctius Foundation (CF) is supporting graduate studies of young Hungarian professionals at American universities and colleges in New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The activity of CF started in 1994; since then more than 150 Hungarian young adults finished their master’s studies. Most of the students receive a master’s of Business Administration or Communication degree.
The Youth Business Program (YBP) started in 2000 when alumni of the Calasanctius Foundation aimed to share their knowledge with high school students. This program entails a special summer school located in Budapest, Hungary; Csikszereda, Romania; and Beregszasz, Ukraine. During these summer courses, former students of the CF teach voluntary business lessons to senior high school students. At the one-week course, students hear lectures about marketing, finance, law, and entrepreneurship. The goal of the week is to teach the students how to prepare a business plan based on actual business opportunities and financial assets. The students learn to work on a team by collecting information, ideas, and solutions for the company they are going to establish. During the 10-year history of the YBP, more than 100 interesting business plans were created. This business education program with a focus on ethics has much more of an important role today than in the past 10 years.

Komor and Jakab: Architects of the Târgu Mureş Palace of Culture

Szpura, Beata · 2019

Cultural Studies/Arts
At the conclusion of the AHEA conference in Kolozsvár/Cluj in 2015, many of us participated in a memorable excursion around Transylvania. One of our stops was Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureş. We were stunned by the beautiful Palace of Culture, replete with paintings and windows depicting Hungarian folk tales, intricately designed furniture, wall designs, chandeliers, and a gorgeous Art Nouveau exterior. Then we saw the nearby synagogue, designed by the same two collaborating architects. Who were they? They were Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, perhaps the proto-starchitects of their era, the early twentieth century, and among the most sought-after architects in contemporary Hungary. They collaborated for 23 years, leaving numerous award-winning buildings, both public and residential, in towns throughout the country. In this talk we will examine some of their masterpieces: the Black Eagle Palace in Nagyvárad/Oradea and the synagogue in Szadbadka/Subotica, a bank in Temesvár/Timişoara, a concert hall in Pozsony/Bratislava, the Erkel Theatre in Budapest, and several private villas, before devoting more attention to the Palace of Culture. The partners were students of Ödön Lechner, the creator of Hungarian Art Nouveau, later advocates (at times overcoming the resistance of their clients) and creative innovators in this style as well as savvy businessmen.

Kossuth in Washington — the Preface

Nyírády, Kenneth · 2011

History/Political Science
Although Kossuth’s arrival in the United States and his subsequent visit to Washington, DC in late December 1851 caused controversy and debate within Congress, it was not the first time that Hungary and Kossuth involved the attention of that body. That occurred two years before, in early December 1849, when President Zachary Taylor, in his annual message to Congress, announced that he had sent to Hungary the previous summer a diplomatic agent empowered to recognize the Hungarian government should it appear able to sustain its independence. The agent, in fact, only got as far as Vienna before learning about the Hungarian surrender at Világos. Nevertheless, President Taylor wanted Congress and the public to know that his administration did not stand idly by while the Hungarians struggled for their independence.

Then Congress became involved. Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan, unsuccessful candidate for the presidency the year before, moved that Congress look into the “expediency of breaking relations with Austria.” A Congressional debate ensured. By the time the dust settled in March, Congress had discussed

1) breaking relations with Austria;
2) granting land to refugees from Hungary;
3) interceding with the government of Turkey to liberate Kossuth;
4) transporting Kossuth from Turkey to the United States; and
5) making public the correspondence between the US Government and its agent in Hungary.

This paper will discuss the results of these discussions and the threads that link them to Kossuth’s actual liberation and passage to the United States. In summary, nothing became of breaking relations or granting land; the Taylor administration anticipated Congress’ wish to intercede for and transport Kossuth to the US but was unable to persuade the Turkish government to cooperate at that time; while making public the correspondence between the government and its agent led to a serious disruption, though not an actual break, in US relations with Austria.

Kossuth in Washington: a Closer Look

Nyírádi, Kenneth · 2010

History/Political Science
Lajos Kossuth came to the United States in December 1851 aiming to enlist the support of the United States government in continuing the struggle against the Habsburg Empire, which had, with the help of Russia, defeated the Hungarians in August 1849. His tumultuous reception in New York City, where hundreds of thousands came out to see him along the procession route, and thousands came to hear him speak at various venues, undoubtedly led him to believe that official support for Hungary was forthcoming. And the scene in New York was repeated—albeit on a smaller scale—in Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Washington DC was another story altogether. Although popular literature emphasizes that while in Washington Kossuth received the high honors of meeting the President and receiving an official introduction to Congress (an honor no foreigner had received up to that point, save the Marquis de Lafayette), his stay in the capital turned out to be string of disappointments. The United States government had no intention of abandoning its traditional foreign policy of neutrality and risking a war with Austria and Russia. Kossuth’s opponents in Congress dragged out the debate for over a month over whether to officially greet him, and then how to greet him. At his meeting with President Millard Fillmore, Kossuth was told rather curtly that, personal sympathies notwithstanding, no official aid to Hungary would be forthcoming. Even Kossuth’s much anticipated meeting with Henry Clay, the most revered and influential voice in the Senate, was disappointing as Clay lectured Kossuth on how quixotic it would be for the United States to become involved in a European war. In summary, Kossuth found much sympathy in Washington but no official aid. Consequently, he devoted the remainder of his time in the United States raising money for the cause from private donations.

Kosztolányi and China

Pavlish, James V. · 2018

Language/Literature
Throughout his life, Dezső Kosztolányi developed a tremendous appreciation for China and its literature. Not only did he translate many of China’s greatest poets into the Hungarian language, he himself wrote several essays on Chinese literature, philosophy, and culture. He also referenced China in several of his own essays and short stories. The presenter will explore Kosztolányi’s reflections on China and its literature during the interwar period which witnessed great intellectual ferment in 20th century Europe, and before China underwent its own major transitions and transformations.

Kosztolanyi’s Aranysarkany at 100

Pavlish, James · 2025 · Paper presentation

Language/Literature
The novel Aranysárkány was set at the beginning of the twentieth century at the time of the Mayfest (Majalis) celebration, which indicates a focus on beginnings. Professor Antal Novák represents principles of reason, tradition and respect for the old order and authority. His failing student represents adulation of strength, speed and power and the neglect of the intellectual life. Professor Novak’s daughter, Hilda, represents sensuality and instant gratification, in contrast to her temperate and studious father. Vili Liszner and daughter Hilda seem to prevail in the denouement of the novel , while Professor Novák is driven to the depths of despair. Was Kosztolányi meaning this as an allegory for the prevalence of the forces of strength, speed and sensuality in the first quarter of the twentieth century over those of reason, respect and tradition? Kosztolanyi wrote Aranysárkány in the early 1920’s after the tragedy of Trianon and the demotion of his own father in the school where he had spent his life, but now required that he teach in Serbian. Aranysárkány has been translated into most of the major European languages with the glaring exception of English. It is to be hoped that it will take its rightful place as one of the classics of not only Hungarian literature, but also world literature.

Kulturális keresztutak a magyar kisebbségi helyzetben, a Trianon utáni erdélyi széppróza tükrében.

Dani, Erzsébet · 2021

Cultural Studies/Arts
Abból a helyzetből, amely a Trianon utáni határontúli magyar kisebbség sorsát jellemzi az következik, hogy a kulturális keresztutak és a kulturális fennmaradási reflexű identitás-struktúrák kétirányú összefüggésbe kerülnek egymással. Vagyis ebből a történelmi helyzetből következően az igen erőteljes identitástudat meghatározza az útválasztást a kulturális keresztútnál; és fordítva, a kulturális keresztúthelyzet identitás-stratégiát meghatározó tényezővé válik. Ezen döntéshelyezetekre találunk releváns példákat számos, a két világháború közötti magyar irodalomban. Ignácz Rózsa, Bözödi György, Nyirő József, Benedek Elek, Tamási Áron műveinek szereplői olyan döntési helyzeteket modelleznek, melyekben egyaránt megjelennek a konformista és nonkonformista válaszok.

Labor Market Polarization Trends and Future Challenges

Németh, Julianna · 2020

Science/Economics
One of the critical research areas of human capital theory and evaluation is the investment in human capital. This topic analyses the introduction of the effects of education on higher wages. This paper has a new approach. The need for skilled labor is more significant in the labor market because of economic development. Neither the American nor other developed countries’ education system can keep pace with the growth rate and they are not able to satisfy the labor market with skilled enough workers. The increase in the employment level is polarizing with the new job opportunities and because of that, there are more and more high-skilled, high-paid and low-skilled, low-paid jobs. The aim of this article to introduce the reasons behind job polarization with the help of international literature from the last two decades. The paper focuses on the American and European labor market trends to show a more comprehensive picture than the previous researches to help the Hungarian policy-making process for future development to decrease the income-based differences.

Lajos Esztergár, Mayor of Pécs, and the Holocaust; Lessons from his Wartime Private Correspondence.

Deák, George · 2025 · Paper presentation

History/Political Science
In January of 2024, the private correspondence of Lajos Esztergár was made available to researchers by the Baranya County branch of the Hungarian National Archives, located in Pécs. I had an opportunity in the summer of 2024 to study this large, previously unanalyzed set of records. With their help, we can get a more nuanced understanding of Esztergár’s attitudes towards Jews and to their deportation. We can also see where his work on the deportation fit into his other concerns during the crucial year of the German occupation. Previous studies differed in their interpretation of Esztergár’s legacy. His undeniable contributions to the advancement of Hungarian social policy in the interwar years were pointed out by archivists Rozs András and Vargha Dezső. These have led to such recognition in the city as the naming of an important street in his honor. Other articles, by local historians István Károly Vörös and János Habel, as well as this author, surmised that such adulation might have been premature. The documents presented here permit us to have a more accurate understanding of the one-time mayor’s actions and views on the deportation. Our presentation will take the context of the events and the prevailing view of the time into account as we make our judgement of whether Esztergár deserves the adulation that he has received in the city.

Landscapes of Loneliness in Benedek Fliegauf’s <i>Tejút</i>

Csenkey, Kristen · 2017

Cultural Studies/Arts
Tejút (2007) or “Milky Way” (dir. Benedek Fliegauf) subtlety captures the essence of loneliness caused by the detachment between humans and nature. Framing the landscape is important in showing this disconnection and isolation. In this paper, I provide a synopsis of the film through a breakdown of the highlighted landscapes, explore the chronology, and interpret the further meaning of this disconnection and breakdown of society. In Tejút, humans must navigate the artificial world they have created for themselves and take with it the unsettling aspects of man-made life. This paper provides a new interpretation of a modern Hungarian film.
